Zach Ertz, a seasoned tight end, and the Detroit Lions have reached an agreement on a contract, a source told cricksportonline.
His arrival comes after Detroit’s 31-23 divisional playoff victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers resulted in a forearm injury to Lions tight end Brock Wright. The Lions’ sole healthy tight end on the roster is Sam LaPorta, and coach Dan Campbell stated that Wright’s availability for Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers doesn’t “look good” due to his injury.
Jonah Jackson, the starting guard for the Lions, is also probably out of the lineup for the 49ers game. Jackson had surgery on Monday to repair a little meniscus tear, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. According to the source, Jackson is anticipated to miss the NFC title game but might return for the Super Bowl if the Lions win.
NFL Network broke the initial word of the agreement, stating that Ertz is anticipated to sign with the practice squad of the Lions before being promoted for the NFC championship game.
In November, the Arizona Cardinals released 33-year-old Eric Ertz. On social media, Ertz’s former colleague J.J. Watt stated that he wanted to be freed in order to join with a contender and “make a run at his 2nd Super Bowl ring.”
In Super Bowl LII, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots 41-33, and he claimed his first ring with the team after making seven receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown.
In October 2021, Ertz was traded from Philadelphia to Arizona. In 2021 and 2022, Ertz’s position coach with the Cardinals was Steve Heiden, the tight ends coach for the Lions.
When he was released, Ertz had been on injured reserve since October 24 due to a quad injury.
He played in the 2023 season opening after recovering from ACL and MCL injuries sustained in Week 10 of the previous year. This season, he participated in seven games and had 27 receptions for 187 yards and a score.
A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Ertz has 709 catches for 7,434 yards and 46 touchdowns in 11 seasons.
